Snowfall Alert: Devon and Beyond
The UK is bracing for a chilly blast, with snow maps predicting a whiteout in Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset. According to WXCharts, the southwest of England will experience snow from midnight on February 15, moving eastward towards the south coast, London, and the Midlands by 6 pm. South Wales is also in the forecast.
The Met Office predicts a period of predominantly cyclonic weather patterns across Britain from February 11 to March 5, with colder conditions likely to persist for a while. Experts warn that the early part of this period could see widespread colder temperatures, bringing the possibility of snow. However, milder and wetter weather may linger in the far south.
The Met Office's color-coded maps indicate potential snow depths of up to 10cm. As for the science behind it, meteorologists consider three key factors when predicting snowfall: the origin of the air mass, precipitation intensity, and the interaction between warm and cold air.
Experts explain that snow formation is more likely when air originates from colder regions, often the north. If the air has come from a warmer area or spent time over mild water, it becomes more challenging to generate snow. Additionally, intense precipitation in winter can keep temperatures lower, increasing the chance of heavy rain turning into snow.
Weather specialists emphasize that most precipitation starts as snow or 'supercooled' raindrops within clouds, melting as it falls to the ground. However, winter's intense precipitation can lower temperatures near the ground, making heavy rain more likely to turn into snow.
Stay tuned for further updates as the weather forecast unfolds, and remember to prepare for the possibility of snow in the coming days.
